Si quisiéramos describir el desierto de Atacama podríamos decir que es inmenso, majestuoso e inmóvil, es acá donde recibiríamos la distinta visión de Carla Monforte, fotógrafa y artista visual radicada en la Región de Antofagasta.
Esta fotógrafa, diseñadora y artista visual nació en Madrid, donde vivió hasta los seis años, luego su familia volvió a Chile, específicamente a la zona central y –por motivos laborales– se trasladaron a la ciudad de Antofagasta junto a su madre, quien era arquitecta. A los 14 años recibió como regalo de su padre, fotógrafo de profesión, una cámara análoga y como ella dice: “desde ahí ya empecé y no paré”. Este momento, que podemos considerar como determinante en su desarrollo artístico, continúa con su estadía en Antofagasta en los años 80, donde comienza su dialogo con el desierto, proceso de formación que se complementó con estudios formales en Diseño Gráfico dentro de la PUCV, siempre ligada a la fotografía y las artes visuales.
Las experiencias y el contacto con diferentes espacios le permiten ir “anotando ideas en su cabeza”, según explica, las cuales dan inicio a los procesos creativos que terminan en ocasiones concretados en obras y en otras ocasiones esperando como ideas. “Mis procesos creativos aparecen en el tiempo como ideas: vienen y esperan para que las pueda materializar, algunas con un desarrollo exitoso, lento a veces, otras aún esperan…”.

Los constantes viajes entre la zona central y el norte grande permiten ir observando cómo este lugar en apariencia superficial, vacío e inmóvil, es en realidad un espacio lleno de dinamismo en donde interactúa la luz, la tierra y el viento. Elementos que generan un paisaje de múltiples perfiles, ideal para la observación y el trabajo fotográfico. Esta noción del desierto como un espacio móvil, dinámico y poli-cromático, se materializa el año 2008 en un trabajo titulado Desierto/Geomorfotografías, aquí se recoge la visión de la artista en donde nos comparte su mirada del desierto.

Los paisajes naturales no agotan su propuesta, pues de igual manera trabaja los espacios urbanos, en específico en la ciudad de Antofagasta, considerando todas las particularidades de un medioambiente construido en medio del desierto más árido del mundo. Ciudad Postal/ANF muestra, a través de fotografías panorámicas, la manera en que esta ciudad es determinada por dos variables sumamente poderosas: el mar y el desierto, donde la ciudad aparece como un borde entre ambos elementos geográficos. Esta obra además recupera un formato sumamente interesante como las postales fotográficas, las cuales son difusoras y creadoras de imágenes.
La noción de desierto como un lugar de contemplación y con una carga simbólica muy poderosa se refleja en los trabajos de esta artista, que en momentos nos recuerda los desiertos descritos en los cuentos de Borges y la majestuosidad de las fotografías de Ansel Adams.

Respecto a sus actuales proyectos, en estos momentos, Carla está desarrollando –a través de un Fondo del CNCA– un trabajo titulado Salar en donde se busca el registro de algunos salares de la región de Antofagasta mostrando el frágil paisaje, la flora y fauna endémica de la zonas desérticas, que como describe la artista: “se quiere mostrar la fragilidad y belleza de este ecosistema único en el mundo”. El objetivo principal es crear un libro con tema regional, que ponga en valor los ecosistemas relacionados con el desierto de Atacama desde una mirada artística ecológica. Esta obra se presenta en un foto-libro, el cual permite que sean las imágenes las que hablan y construyan el relato, otra de las ventajas que se destacan sobre este formato es su fácil difusión en diferentes audiencias.
El interesante trabajo de esta fotógrafa nos recuerda la doble mirada sobre espacios que en una primera instancia parecen inertes, pero en realidad están llenos de colores, movimientos y contrastes.

{:}{:en}If we’d like to describe the Atacama desert, we could say that it’s enormous, majestic, and unmoving. Here is where we’d get the different version of Carla Monforte, photographer and visual artist located in the Antofagasta region.
This photographer, designer, and visual artist was born in Madrid, where she lived 6 years. After that, her family came back to Chile, specifically in the central area. And, because of work, they relocated to the city of Antofagasta with her mother, who was architect. When she was 14, her father, photographer by profession, gifted her analogous camera and, as she says: “There I started and never stopped.” That moment that can be considered as decisive in her artistic development, she continued living in Antofagasta during the 80s, when she begins a dialogue with the desert. A making process complemented by formal studies of Graphic Design in the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, always linked to the photography and visual arts.
The experiences and the contact with different spaces allow her to “note down ideas in her head,” as she explains, which begin the creative process that sometimes ends in concrete works, and sometimes waiting as ideas. “My creative processes appear in time as ideas: they come and wait to be materialized. Some of them with a success development sometimes slow. Others are still waiting…”
The constant travels between the central area and the north of the country allowed her to observe how this place, superficial in appearance, empty, and unmoving, is in reality a space full of dynamism where light, soil, and wind interact. Elements that generate multi-profile scenery likely for observation and photographic work. This idea of desert as a moving, dynamic and poly-chromate space is materialized in 2008 in a work titled Desierto/Geomorfotografìas. Here, the vision the artist share to us about the vision of the desert appears.

The natural landscapes don’t exhaust her proposal. Likewise, she works with urban spaces, specifically Antofagasta, considering every distinct feature on an environment formed in the middle of the aridest desert in the world. Ciudad Postal/ANF project exhibits, through panoramic photographies, the way on which the city is determined by two extremely powerful variables: the sea and the desert, where the city appears as a limit between these two geographical elements. This work also recovers an interesting format such as the photographic postcards, which are diffusing and creator of images.
The idea of desert as a place to contemplate, and with a powerful symbolic burden reflected in the works of the artist. In times, they remind us to the deserts describes in Borges’ tales and the majesty of Ansel Adams’ photography.
With respect to her current projects, at this time, Carla is developing, through a CNCA fund (National Council of Culture and Arts,) a work titled Salar where she seek the register of some Salt Flats of the Antofagasta region, showing the fragile scenery and endemic flora and fauna of desert areas, that, as the artist says: “fragility and beauty of this unique ecosystem in the world is what is wanted to be exhibited.” The main subject is to create a book with regional topic. A book that highlights ecosystems related with Atacama Desert from an ecological artistic view. This work is presented in a photo-book which allows images to speak and develop the story. Another advantage that highlights in this format is its easy diffusion in different audiences.
The interesting work of this artista remind us the double view about spaces that, in a first moment, seem to be inert, but they are, in fact, full of colors, movements and contrasts.
