Los inicios de Macarena Varela Munchmeyer en el arte fueron alimentados por su madre, quien influenció su imaginación y creatividad mediante juegos y aventuras, introduciéndola a ella y sus hermanos en el mundo del arte a través de la pintura y escultura.
Sus años de escuela los pasó en el Colegio de Institución Teresiana, continuando con sus estudios superiores en la carrera de Diseño Gráfico en la Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, donde un profesor titular le hizo descubrir la rama más artística de la carrera. Aquello la llevó a investigar y concentrarse en esa área, pero luego de varios años dedicada a su profesión, decidió emprender con el trabajo artístico de lleno. En sus inicios aprendió de su madre, para después inscribirse en talleres de figura humana con Eva Lefever y talleres de óleo con Gonzalo Orellana y Francisco González.
Es así que al pasar los años, Macarena ha desarrollado una obra sin igual, que parte desde la sincronía con su espacio personal a través de la música clásica, la lectura, el boceto y los materiales acerca del tema que busca tratar; para luego pasar a la composición, donde busca “que en la tela se traduzca un sentido y emoción. Quiero reflejarla tal como yo la siento”, explica.
Esto se ve reflejado en su obra, el gesto de movimiento en sus trabajos es bastante particular, como si se tratara de espectros o entes metafísicos que se mezclan con su espacio. Para la artista todo es movimiento, todo se transforma y, sin embargo, la sociedad ha perdido la capacidad de observación, se ha quedado estática sin percibir como todo su entorno cambia: “Hemos sido comidos por las grandes ciudades, somos árboles plantados pero sin procesos de cambio, somos una especie de árboles de cemento a los cuales no se les permite diferenciarse del resto. La capacidad de asombro y volvernos a hacer está quedando de lado”. Sus obras se hacen cargo de esa acusación, su técnica provee a lo representado de movimiento y vibración, es una inquietud de traspasar la tela y dirigirse al exterior a través de la mirada del espectador.
Gracias a este movimiento palpitante e inquieto, lo representado se plantea como personaje y espacio a la vez, en otras palabras, como si el personaje representado también fuese el espacio en el que se sitúa, como si encarnara el color más allá de su representación, dejando de ser un objeto pasivo y otorgándole una emocionalidad activa. Macarena explica esta interpretación de la siguiente manera: “Una excavación o rasguño desdibuja un paisaje, altera la naturaleza de manera tal que cambia la esencia del entorno. Esa intervención cambió al ser que la habita, se transforma en otro, acompañado de otra emoción, de otra piel. Por eso el personaje pasa a ser el entorno y viceversa. Al final terminamos siendo mezclados con el entorno, aunque no queramos. Me interesa que mi trabajo mueva al espectador, o sea que lo con-mueva. Que lo afecte en cierta medida o en su totalidad”.
Macarena, por estos días, trabaja en una exposición en el Palacio Rioja de Viña del Mar que se abrirá el próximo año, donde tratara su vínculo con la familia Rioja. Además, trabaja en un proyecto de planos y mapas, que desafían las estructuras y legados.

Macarena Varela Munchmeyer’s beginnings on art were nourished by her mother, who influenced her imagination and creativity through games and adventures, introducing her and her brothers into the art world through painting and sculpture.
She spent her years of school on the Colegio de Institucion Teresiana School, continuing her college degree on Graphic design on the Universitad Catolica de Valparaiso University, where the principal professor made her discover the most artistic branch of the career. That took her to investigate and focus on that area, but after a few years dedicated to her profession, she decided to fully undertake with her artistic work. In her beginnings she learnt from her mother, to later sign on workshops of human figure with Eva Lefever and workshops of oil painting with Gonzalo Orellana and Francisco Gonzalez.
This is show as time went by, Macarena has developed an unique work, which starts from the synchrony with her personal space through Classical music, literature, sketch and the materials related to the subject he wants to tackle; to later move to the composition, where she seeks “that a sense and emotion translate into the fabric. I want to reflect it just how I feel it”, she explains.
This can be observed in her work, the gestor of movement on his pieces is pretty peculiar, as if it was about specters or metaphysic entities that mix with its space. For this artist everything is movement, everything transforms and, however, the society has lost the capacity of observation, it has remained static without perceiving how all the environment changes: “We have been eaten by the big cities, we are planted trees but without processes of change, we are an specie of concrete trees that are not allowed to distinguish from the rest. The ability of amazement and reinventing ourselves is has been left aside.” Her pieces are in charge of that accusation, her technique provides movements and vibration to the represented, is a curiosity of going pass the fabric and to moving to the exterior through the observer’s eye.
Thanks to this pounding and restless movement, the represented is contemplated as a character and as a space at the same time, in other words, as if the represented character was also the space in which is located, as if it embodied the color beyond its representation, stop being a passive object and giving it an active emotion. That research changed the being that inhabits it, it transforms into another, together with another emotion, with another skin. For that, the character becomes the environment and vice versa. I am interested on my work to move towards the observer, or that moves him or her. That affects him or her in some level or completely.”
Macarena, nowadays, is working in an exhibition on the Palace Rioja of Viña del Mar that will open next year, where it will be discuss her link with the Rioja family. She is also working on a project of blueprints and maps, which challenge the structures and legacies.
