Louis Hock, artista multimedia estadounidense, acaba de terminar su última creación. Una intervención que consiste en la construcción de una enorme pared en el vestíbulo del Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de San Diego, una institución que está a sólo 16 millas de México. La obra originalmente no estaba inspirada en el candidato presidencial Donald Trump pero sí es decididamente contra lo que él representa: “ el miedo, el racismo y el odio a los inmigrantes», señaló Hock.

El artista, que creció en las ciudades fronterizas de Estados Unidos y ahora vive cerca de San Diego en California, ha pasado gran parte de su carrera luchando contra la xenofobia. A finales de 1970 comenzó a producir vídeos para documentar la lucha diaria de los inmigrantes mexicanos. En 1993 se asoció con Elizabeth Sisco y David Avalos para ofrecer una «reducción de impuestos», entregando billetes de 10USD a los jornaleros mexicanos en California no reconocidos por sus contribuciones a la economía de Estados Unidos. Y en 1997, cortó un agujero en la valla de acero que bordea la ciudad mexicana de Tijuana «de modo que la gente pudiera besar, o cargar a sus bebés de un lado a otro, o tacos de cambio», comentó en dicha oportunidad.
La pared, de 25 metros de largo y 2,5 de alto, se extiende en diagonal a través del espacio y está destinada a tropezar con los visitantes. «Espero que haga pensar de alguna manera pequeña sobre lo que sucede cuando un muro se construye a través de una comunidad. Al ver una pared en una revista o en Internet no es lo mismo que una pared que este frente a una persona. Una pared quita algo de ti», aseveró Luis Hock.
La pared de Hock está destinada a ser temporal. La intervención, que se erigió la semana pasada y descenderá el martes 27 de septiembre, fue construida con más de 1.000 ladrillos de papel reciclado. «Es una pared de papel. No quería una pared pesada o de metal. Yo no quería que el peso esté en el objeto en sí, sino en la idea», concluyó el artista.

The piece was originally not inspired on the Presidential candidate Donal Trump but it is without in doubt against what he represents: “the fear, the racism and the hate to the immigrants”, appointed Hock.

The artist, which grew up on the bordering cities of the United States and now lives near San Diego, California, has spent most of her career fighting against xenophobia. By the end of 1970 he began yo produce videos to document the daily struggle of the Mexican immigrants. In 1993 he associated together with Elizabeth Sisco and David Avalos to the Mexican day laborers in California that were not recognized by their contributions to the American economy. In 1997, he cut a hole on the steel fence that surrounded the Mexican city of Tijuana “ so the people could kiss, or hold their babies from one side to the other, or exchange tacos”, commented in that opportunity.
The wall, of 25 meters long and 2,5 meters of hight, lays out in diagonal through the area and it is destined to stumble with the visitants. “ I hope it makes people think in some way in relation to what happens when a wall is built across a community. Seeing a wall in a magazine or in Internet is not the same as seeing a wall located in front a person. A wall steals something from you,” explains Luis Hock.
Hock’s wall is intended to be temporal. The intervention, lounged last week and will conclude on Tuesday 27th, September, was build with over 1.000 recycled paper bricks. “Is a paper wall. I did not want a heavy or metal wall. I did not want the weight to be in the project itself, but in the idea2, explained the artist.
