La novela de ciencia ficción Dune, escrita por Frank Herbert en 1965 es considerada una piedra angular en el género. A lo largo de sus seis tomos y miles de páginas, la opera magna del autor estadounidense trata temas como la depredación de la cultura, el uso de drogas y el dominio a través de diversas herramientas ligadas a la superestructuras del poder. La narración cuenta cómo los conflictos terrenales basados en la avaricia y la ambición se extrapolan a una escala universal.
La monopolización de los recursos y de la riqueza se transforma en la fuerza que mueve a imperios y pueblos a guerras con tal de hacerse del preciado recurso llamado “malange”. Esta especia se caracteriza por tener propiedades adictivas y estimulantes, además de ser únicamente extraíble del planeta Dune. Su comercialización y distribución genera todo un sistema político de explotación a su alrededor, con incontables luchas por hacerse de su control.
Quien domine y controle la malange, podrá subyugar a todo el universo.
En 1974 Alejandro Jodorowsky vio el potencial de esta saga; su intención fue crear una gran película que encerrara la riqueza de los temas descritos. Aunque no había leído la novela, el director y artista chileno vio el potencial de la historia ideada por Harbert.
Para Jodorowsky Dune era una oportunidad para acercar a la humanidad a un estado superior de conciencia. A través de la producción del largometraje, el cineasta, autor de La Montaña Sagrada, buscaba crear una obra trascendente.

Entusiasmado, partió a recorrer el mundo en búsqueda de un equipo con el que pudiera trabajar en pos a la gestación de este ambicioso proyecto. En Francia reclutó a Jean “Moebius” Giraud, quien se encargó del storyboard y del diseño de personajes y del vestuario. Nombres como Christopher Foss, H.R. Giger se unen a las tareas de preproducción. A nivel musical Jodorowsky sondeó a grupos como Pink Flyd, Tangerine Dream, Gong y Magma para ver si estaban interesados en realizar la banda sonora de la película.
En el casting de actores sucede lo mismo: Mick Jagger, David Carradine, Orson Welles y Dalí aparecieron como candidatos a encarnar a los personajes del universo Dune.Incluso Frank Harbert, autor de Dune, da el visto bueno a la versión cinematográfica de su obra tras reunirse con Jodorowsky.
El trabajo comenzaba y los recursos se consumieron rápidamente. En la fase de preproducción ya se había gastado más de un tercio del presupuesto total. Los avances fueron impresionantes y sentaron las bases para films como Alien y Star Wars.
El último escoyo que había que superar para dar el impulso necesario y definitivo para empezar por fin con el rodaje era llegar a un acuerdo con Hollywood para la distribución internacional de la película. Las negociaciones no fructiferaron; lo que marcó el fin de uno de los proyectos artísticos contemporáneos más ambiciosos que se hayan registrado en el cine.

This kind is characterized to have addictive and stimulating attributes, in addition to being removable of the Dune planet. Its commercialization and distribution generates an exploitation politic system with countless struggles to win the control.
Who dominate and control the malange may captivate the entire universe.
In 1974, Alejandro Jodorowsky saw the potential of this saga; his intention was make a great film that has the wealth of the described topics. Although she did not read the novel, the director and Chilean artist saw the potential of the story conceived by Herbert.
For Jodorowsky, Dune was an opportunity to bring closer the humanity to a superior conscience state. Through the production of the full-length film, the filmmaker, author of The Sacred Mountain wanted to create a transcendent work.

Excited, he starts to goes all over the world in search of a team with which he can to work behind the development of this ambitious project.
