María Pía Cortes, inició su carrera artística en 1989 estudiando Dibujo y Pintura con Eugenio Dittborn. Si bien continuó desarrollándose en esa praxis, la búsqueda constante de nuevas tendencias la motivaron para continuar sus estudios de pintura con Sergio Stitchkin durante 1993.
Alta Mar
Siendo la curiosidad y la investigación de diferentes técnicas su fuente de motivación, comenzó a experimentar con el teñido en género, para luego manejar el uso de sulfatos que complementan su técnica mixta y el dominio del Batik –técnica milenaria utilizada para teñir tejidos y que consiste en aplicar capaz de cera sobre las regiones que desean dejar reservadas, fijando así los tintes en las zonas donde intencionalmente se busca plasmar el color–.
Desapego
El color es muy importante en todas sus obras, razón por la cual los selecciona intencionalmente, sin dejar nada al albedrío. En el caso del Batik, algunos dan la sensación de aparecer mágicamente, lo que genera el factor sorpresa una vez que el trabajo se encuentra terminado y lo hace más interesante. Algo similar ocurre con la figuración o formas, que si bien se buscan intencionalmente, siempre hace surgir cosas nuevas.
María Pía establece que le encanta experimentar con distintas técnicas, primero empezó con óleo y la figuración, después experimentó con acrílicos, saltando a los sulfatos y a la abstracción, pero fue la técnica del Batik la cual la movilizo más. “Cualquier expresión artística que me acomode y sienta que estoy haciendo cosas nuevas me siento realizada”, comenta, y sostiene a través del estudio de distintas técnicas toma lo que más le sirve para potenciar sus obras logrando así un dialogo muy personal con las mismas.
Sus obras son una forma de expresión donde, como artista, se siente absolutamente interpretada. Inspiradas en distintos elementos de la naturaleza y jugando con el color, dando movimiento, armonía y transparencia. En cada obra se puede ver el factor que tanto busca, lo orgánico y el cómo los colores son los que predominan en cada imagen. Su horizonte está dirigido a nuevas formas de expresión basadas en las antiguas culturas Indonésicas.
Actualmente es artista a tiempo completo, con horarios de trabajo que puede compatibilizar con su vida cotidiana y familiar, sin descuidar su praxis y constante investigación de las técnicas que más le interesan.
En estos momentos está terminando una exposición junto a la artista Isabel Lorca en la Embajada de Chile en Washington, con gran convocatoria y buenas críticas sobre su trabajo.

Being the curiosity and the investigation of different techniques her source of motivation, she started to experiment with the fabric dying to later handle the use of sulfates that complement her mixed technique and the use of the Batik, millenary technique used to dye fabrics and that is based in apply layers of wax over the areas that are left reserved, to fix in this way the dyes in the areas where is intentionally wanted to capture the color.
Desapego
Color is extremely important in each one of her works, this is way she intentionally selects very element, without leaving anything to the free will. In the case of Batik, some give the impression to magically appear which generates the surprise factor once the work is finished and it makes it more interesting. Something similar happens with the figurativism and shapes, that even though they are intentionally searched, they always make new things to appear.
Maria Pia stablished that she loves to experiment with different techniques, she first started with oil painting and figurativism, later she experimented with acrylics jumping to the sulfates and the abstraction, but was the Batik’s technique the one that moved her even farther. “ Any artistic expression that suits me and that I feel that I am making new things makes me feel rewarded” she comments, and adds that through the study of different techniques she takes what works the most for her to improve her works, creating a very personal dialogue with them.
Her morks are a way of expression where, as an artist, she feels completely idenified. Inspired in the different elements of nature and playing with color, movement, harmony, and transparency. In each piece can be observed the factor she is so eagerly looking for, the organic and how the colors are the ones that predominates in each image. Her horizon is directed towards the new ways of expressions based on the ancient Indonesian cultures.
Nowadays she is a full time artist, with work schedules that she can juggles with her trivial and family life, without neglecting her praxis and constant investigation of the techniques that she is more interested about.
She is now finishing an exhibition together with the artist Isabel Lorca in the Chilean embassy in Washington, with great attendance and good critics related to her work.
