{:es}Piedad Donoso Baraona nació el 26 de junio de 1992, en Guayaquil, Ecuador, y a los 6 años se llegó a vivir a Chile. Cursó estudios en el Colegio San Benito, en la Región Metropolitana, posteriormente ingresando, en el año 2011, a la Universidad Católica de Chile cursando el College de Artes y Humanidades, especializándose en la expresión artística e Historia del Arte. El 2014 terminó sus estudios e inició un taller de ilustración con Francisco Olea y Alberto Montt.
Desde pequeña a Piedad le gustaba ir a museos, conocer artistas y aprender sobre la historia del arte, además de interesarle la música y el cine. Al crecer cayó en cuenta que su trabajo llamaba la atención de las personas, y que cada una de ellas le otorgaba variados sentidos a su obra, lo que la llevó a poner el arte como una prioridad en su vida.
El trabajo de Piedad está enfocado a la realización y producción de collage, a través de estos, ella busca transmitir la nostalgia del pasado, un tema que tiene una carga tanto histórica como emocional, y por esa razón, intenta darles a sus obras un nuevo significado. Es bajo este mismo concepto, que ella trabaja con fotografías y revistas de antaño, dándoles una nueva historia y propósito a las imágenes, según comenta: “busco revivir esos personajes y darles una nueva historia”.
La niñez
Para la realización de su trabajo, su entorno es un actor principal al momento de entrar en el proceso creativo. Su taller es el lugar donde guarda las fotografía, recortes, entre otros materiales, ordenado y seleccionados pues, “cuando pienso a alguna persona específica para un collage, sé dónde encontrarla (…) trabajo con mi propio desorden”, explica; por este motivo es que, al momento de trabajar en nuevos proyectos pasa la mayor parte del tiempo en su taller.
Desde la perspectiva del espectador, se puede apreciar el juego entre la gran gama de filtros de luces propias de la fotografía antigua, especialmente, entre los tonos sepia y los grises, lo que crea una dicotomía llamativa cuando apreciamos el uso de fotografías e imágenes a color. La intención de la artista, de darle un nuevo lenguaje a los personajes y objetos extraídos de los soportes que utiliza, funciona de manera exquisita, lo que refleja el trabajo riguroso y la meticulosidad con la que emplea los materiales, lo que convierte a su obra en una experiencia artística novedosa.

El contraste de tonos y luces habla, al igual que los cuerpos, los objetos, los edificios, los recortes y los vacíos. La intención final de Piedad cobra vida, al darle un nuevo sentido a los personajes, al traer esas imágenes pretéritas al presente, que nos recuerdan tiempos más simples, a nosotros, ojos del público moderno.
Es en este sentido, que la opinión de Piedad respecto a la recepción del arte en la sociedad chilena es positiva, aclarando que esta sociedad, de a poco, se está abriendo a nuevas miradas y en consecuencia, se están abriendo nuevos espacios y oportunidades para el desarrollo del arte en Chile.
Piedad Donoso Baraona was born on June 26, 1992, in Guayaquil, Ecuador. When she turned six years old, she and her family moved to Chile. She attended San Benito School, which is located in the Santiago Metropolitan Region. In 2011, she attended Universidad Católica de Chile University where she studied an undergraduate level course in Art and Humanities. Then, she specialized in Artistic Expression and Art History. In 2014, she finished her studies and started an illustration workshop together with Francisco Olea and Alberto Montt.
Since she was little, Piedad was fond of visiting museums, getting to know artists, and learning about the history of art. She was also interested in music and movies. While growing up, she realized that her work caught the attention of people, and they would give her varied meanings to her work. This changed her mind and she made art her priority in life.
Piedad’s work is about creating and producing collages. Through them, she wants to transmit the nostalgia for the past, which is an issue that has a historical and emotional burden. This is why she tries to give meaning to her work. It is in this context where she works with old-time photos and magazines, giving them a new story and purpose. “I want to give new life and story to these characters,” she said.
In order to begin her work, the environment becomes into the main actor when she starts the creative process. She keeps her photos, clippings, and other stuff in her workshop. “When I think of a specific person for a collage, I know where to find her or him… I work with my own mess,” she explains. This is the reason why she spends most of the time in her workshop while she works on new projects.
From the observer’s point of view, there’s interplay in the great range of light filters that are typical from old photography, especially gray and sepia toning. This creates a remarkable dichotomy when we appreciate the use of photographs and color image. The artist’s purpose is exquisite. Her work is about giving a new language to the characters and to the objects that are extracted from the photographic supports. Her work reflects her rigorous and meticulous method that she employs on the materials. This turns her work into an original artistic experience.
The bodies, objects, buildings, clippings, empty spaces and the tone and light contrasts are important. Piedad’s final intention comes to life by giving a new meaning to the characters. At the same time, she brings back those past images to the present. These remind us a simpler time before the eyes of the modern society.
Therefore, Piedad’s opinion is positive about the reception of art in the Chilean society. In this context, the Chilean society is slowly acquiring a new perspective. Thus, there are new spaces and opportunities for the development of art in Chile.
