Christopher Columbus dubbed Venezuela the ‘Land of Grace’ in his journal describing the voyage to the New World, but this is no longer the case. Modern utopias anchored in lavish ideals have transformed into true individual and collective tragedies after the sudden and harsh exploitation of underground mineral resources. Venezuela’s recent history bears witness to this: despite having one of the largest oil reserves in the world, it has not been able to guarantee economic growth and social equality for its citizens.
