Comienza Art Fair Málaga 2017

The 2017 Art Fair Málaga is an international fair that ranks as the second most important of its genre in Spain.

The fair will take place at the Palacio de Ferias y Congresos this weekend, between June 30th and July 2nd, within a space of 7 000 square meters that will accommodate 500 artists and 40 galleries from 31 countries. The greatest novelty of the fair compared to other similar events is integrating galleries that aspire to be featured in the international agenda and artists that represent themselves, all in a single event.

According to the head of Art Fair Málaga, Martín Gallego, the fair aims to generate a space for visibility to support “very good artists that have not been able to penetrate the art market”. Moreover, he confirmed that “the number of galleries is decreasing, and many of them do not have access to art fairs,” which, in his opinion, justifies the motto of Art Fair Málaga. “We believe in giving people chances so we create them. Your work is your story, not your resume”.

This first edition of Art fair Málaga hopes to attract more than 15 000 visitors and it will try to bring art closer to a broader public, who, in addition to going through all the stands, will be able to participate in lectures, conferences, live painting expos, performances and recreational activities. Of the 31 countries that are a part of the fair, Spain, Argentina and Portugal are the most represented. In regards to the artists, 87% come from Europe, 7,5% from America, and the rest from Africa and Asia. Spain is the country with the most participants with a total of 350 artists, followed by Portugal with 10, France and the UK with 6 each. Creators from Galicia, the Balearic Islands, Castilla-La Mancha and the Canary Islands will also be attending. The international participation at the fair also comprises galleries: of the confirmed 40, some come from Spain, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, USA, Italy, Switzerland and Portugal. The same goes for associations that come from countries like Portugal, Finland, Costa Rica and Spain.

Furthermore, the Cuban painter, Darío Viejo (1966), one of the most coveted artists in Latin America, will be the International Guest of Honor at the Art Fair Málaga. His work is based on a unifying painting that pays close attention to the signs and gestures of civilizations, languages and cultures, with drawings that do not engage on the anecdotal and that are charged with an enigmatic beauty.

Marisol Grisanti is another Latin American representative, whose work is full of oneiric landscapes done in a luminous chromatic color palette. The artist narrates that, to find her own signature, she had to go through many experimentation phases, using different kinds of techniques and materials, until she landed on lineal water-based painting and charcoal drawings: “I like my work to have my own signature and I also like that it’s the result of all the work I have done persistently over the years,” she said. In this process, she was also greatly influenced by the internal process she went through, which led her to find the themes or ideas she wanted to capture in her work.

One of the main aspects to be tackled in the fair will be the new way of relating to contemporary art through technology. Therefore, one of Art Fair Málaga’s innovative proposals will be the Digital Exhibition, launched for the very first time in Spain. The exhibit will show the work of over 200 artists on high definition screens. The fair will also hold virtual reality expos in a collaboration with IMart Workshop Studio in Alicante, allowing the public to interact with different art experiences.
