En el sector norponiente de Santiago, ahí donde la vida de barrio aún existe y los grafitis expresan sus críticas en los muros de las casas, la artista Daphne Anastassiou tiene su taller. Un espacio amplio, acogedor, lleno de ventanales por donde se cuelan los rayos del astro rebotando en los cuadros y esculturas que están repartidos alrededor. Un lugar lleno de luz. Proveniente del sol, de sus creaciones y, por sobre todo, de ella.

Con genética griega aventurera corriendo por su sangre, Anastassiou desde muy chica se relacionó con el mundo del arte y empezó a aflorar en ella la pasión por crear. En las tardes que acompañaba y trabajaba con la “gran artista”–su madre orfebre a quien veía gozar con lo que hacía en su taller–, en esos viajes a Europa donde visitaban museos y ella sentía desesperación por estar haciendo algo más. “Tenía ganas de estar pintando, de estar creando”.
Estudió psicología en vez de arte, pero nunca lo vio como un impedimento sino todo lo contrario. “No tengo miedo a hacer nada. Rompo con todas las estructuras y normas”, porque al no haberse instruido en la academia, no configura sus obras conforme a los cánones y patrones establecidos. Más aún, pudo incursionar en la creación pictórica como un proceso de desarrollo personal y de una forma autodidacta. Es así como la artista vio la pintura como un juego donde salía su ser lúdico y se sentía en libertad.

Poseedora de la técnica mixta donde con acrílicos, óleos y lápices pasteles; en maderas, telas y papeles; con pinceles, espátulas, esponjas, paños e incluso con sus manos forja mundos llenos de colores donde las dimensiones y los vínculos son su temática principal.
Desde sus inicios consideró sus pinturas como una invitación para buscar dentro de nosotros mismo la belleza y la luz, “para contactarnos con lo sagrado de nuestra esencia y vernos más allá de la forma”. Hoy pinta personas, multitudes, las uniones entre ellas y con el universo. Lo que guarda un profundo sentido con su identidad, porque “lo que esta adentro es lo que se proyecta afuera” y Anastassiou anhela ese trance constante de estar en conexión, ese silencio donde es feliz.
Pintó por años y guardó cuidadosamente su trabajo, sabiendo que alguna vez le gustaría compartirlo, hasta que ese día llego. Primero, retomó la pintura desde una postura de plena libertad en los talleres de Michele Cassou. Luego, fue Jaime León y Concepción Balmes quienes la alentaron con sus consejos. “Tienes que hacer tu primera exposición”, “tienes que mostrar tu trabajo”, y así fue.
Pese a que a la fecha ya ha expuesto en Nueva York, Londres, Paris, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Shanghai y Santiago, entrar al universo del arte no fue tan fácil como parece, menos cuando se es originaria de un país donde el currículum pesa y la educación formal se sigue sobrevalorando. “Yo persevero”, dice la artista, y eso más un delicado, prolijo y ordenado trabajo logró que se abriera un espacio en el ambiente del arte. Tanto así que desde 2011 la Galería Colette Dubois de Paris la representa.
Daphne Anastassiou tiene la certeza de que todo esta conectado con todo. Las personas, la naturaleza, las experiencias. Hoy esta enfocada en “apreciar y agradecer a todo y todos en su camino”, porque cree que no hay nada que este fuera de lugar y que al final todo encaja en armonía. Lo que es posible apreciar en su trabajo, en ese dialogo de colores que es el producto del descanso de su cabeza y el goce que crear le produce. “Todo emerge, hay que estar conectados con el sentir. Todos somos canalizadores, todos somos artistas” y ella de seguro no dejara nunca de crear.

In the North West sector of Santiago, there where the neighborhood life still remains and the graffitists express their critics on the houses’ walls, the artist Daphne Anastassiou has her workshop. An open space, cozy, filled with picture windows where the sun light bounce on the paintings and sculptures that are distributed around the studio. A place filled with light; coming from the sun, her creations, and above all, from her.

With a Greek adventurous genetic running through her blood; since she was a child, Anastassiou got related with the world of art and started to arise in her the passion for create. On the afternoons that shared and help the “great artist” ,her metalsmith’s mother to who she watches enjoy what she created on her shop, in those trips to Europe where they visited museums and she felted the desperation for doing something else. “I had the urge to paint, to create.”
She studied Psychology instead of Art, but never saw it as an impediment. “I am not scared of doing anything. I break all the rules and structures”, because not being instructed in the Academy does not shape her works according to the established cannons and patterns. Even more, she was able to make an incursion in the pictorial creation as a process of personal development and as a self-educated way. This is how the artist saw the painting as a game where her play-orientated nature emerged and she felted free.
“When I Paint I like the piece to surprise me. I let myself go by the sense.”
Owner of the mixed technique where with acrylics, oil paintings and pastel pencils; in woods, fabrics, and papers; wit pencils, palette knives, sponges, rags and even with her hands, she creates worlds full of colors where the dimensions and the vehicles are her main subject.
Since her beginnings she considers her paintings as an invitation to search inside of ourselves the beauty and light; “to contact us with the sacred of our essence and to see us beyond the form.” Nowadays, she paints people, crowds, and the union between them and with the universe. Which possess a deep sense with her identity because “what is inside is what projects on the outside” and Anastassiou longs for that constant trance of being in connection, that silence where she is happy.
She painted for years and carefully kept her Works, knowing that someday she would like to share it, and that day finally came. First, she resumed painting from a position of absolute freedom on the workshops of Michele Cassou. Later, Jaime Leon and Concepcion Balmes were the ones who encouraged her with their advices. “You have to do your first exhibition”, “you have to show your work”, and that is the way it was.
Although to date she has already exhibited in New York, London, Paris, Buenos Aires, Madrid, Shanghai, and Santiago, to enter into the art universe was not so easy as it seems, even more when you come from a country where the resume weighs and the formal education is still overrated. “I persevere”, explains the artist; that and a delicate, clean and organized work made her to be participant of the art atmosphere. Such was the case, that from 2011 the Colette Dubois Gallery in Paris started to represent her.
Daphne Anastassiou has the certainty that all is connected; people, nature, experiences. Today, she is focus on “appreciate and give thanks for everything and everyone in her way”, because she thinks there is nothing out of place and at the end it all fits together in harmony. In her work is possible to observe that dialogue of colors which is the product of her head’s relaxation and the pleasure she experiences at creating. “It all emerges; you have to be connected with the sense. We are all channelers, we are all artists” and she assured she will never stop creating.
