Poseedora de un poder expresivo indiscutible, Trigal con Cuervos es una de las obras más famosas de Vincent Van Gogh. Muchos mitos se erigieron en torno a ella, como aquel que decía que se trataba de la última pintura que hizo el holandés. Algunos buscaron significados ocultos en la composición, otros sobreinterpretaron las imágenes dispuestas en el lienzo.

La pintura es un choque entre diversas sensaciones, por un lado la tristeza y la soledad, por el otro, la vitalidad y la fuerza del campo; da cuenta del congestionado estado del pintor, quien se desplazaba entre estados de gran alegría y depresión. Los trazos del pincel, de gran volumen, dan un aura de oscuridad al cielo. Este tono, presente también en los cuervos, contrasta con el amarillo de los trigales.
Al analizar cada uno de los elementos que dan forma a la composición, ésta da cuenta de su riqueza estética y expresiva. El cielo tormentoso da un tono oscuro a la imagen, es una expresión de las fuerzas omnipotentes de la naturaleza. Los cuervos realizan un vuelo de profundo simbolismo. Aunque se les suele asociar con la muerte, Van Gogh declaró en varias cartas su admiración por la belleza y libertad de estas aves, las que en sí justifican su inclusión en la tela. Resulta difícil determinar la dirección del movimiento de la bandada, lo que queda a interpretación personal del observador.
