Nueva York se viste de Arte: comienzan las principales ferias del año

From the classic Armory Show (originated over 100 years ago) to Volta NY (which celebrates its 10th anniversary); this week, the quintessential cosmopolitan city transforms into an art epicenter with a variation of fairs that are part of the most prestigious of the world. Find out about the characteristics and news of the scene in New York of this year.

Today, main art fairs of New York open their doors to the public in different spots of the city: from Piers to the classic SoHo neighborhood, Armory Show, Volta NY, Scope and New Art Deallers Alliance (NADA) will be exposing the galleries and more important artists of New York City and other places of the world, without any interruptions until the next February 5th.

Armory Show

It was originated in 1913, along with the first exposition in the National Guard Armory of the city. That year put an inflection point between traditional academy and the arrival of Modern Art to the scene in New York, where it included the European vanguard of that time, and people together with the media, were shocked by the Impressionist, Cubist and Fauvist works. Located in Piers 92 and 94, where there are historic industrial buildings as docks. The place receives 65,000 visitors every year.

Among the participants, this 2017, the Japanese Yayoi Kusama will be present as well as the Chilean Iván Navarro, and the Chinese Ai Weiwei, together they join artists like Abel Barroso (Cuba), Patricia Cronin (USA), Douglas Coupland (Canada), Olga de Amaral (Colombia), Dorian Gaudin (France-USA), Jun Kaneko (Japan), Per Kirkeby (Denmark), Fiete Stolte (Germany) and Lawrence Weiner (USA).

Volta NY

The Volta fair, which celebrates its 10th anniversary, will gather 96 galleries along with agents from 5 continents –but mainly from the US–, from which 36 will present at the mounted fair located in Piers 90. From Latin American scene stands out the Brazilian gallery Gabinete de Arte K2O, which will present master Essay Galeno, and the Colombian Timebag along with the video performances of Juan Obando.

In addition, it will be carried out the itinerant proposal of Volta for the second year in a row. Titled Your Body Is a Battleground, where the young curator Wendy Voguel has selected a group of artists to make a dialogue beyond the museum’s walls, as a particular perspective contrasting with the traditional architecture of the Volta space and projects surrounding it.

Scope

The Metropolitan Pavilion will receive the 17th edition of Scope New York with works by Yayoi Kusama and Andy Warhol. The most international fair in New York will include 59 international galleries, by the presence of Germany, Spain, Austria, England, and Japan, where also stands out the participation of the Chilean gallery Yael Rosenblut and the Argentinian gallery C-Arte.

NADA

The New Art Deallers Alliance –originated in 2002– will gather 100 galleries, from which 30 are participating for the first time. With a long list of international guests in the Skylight Clarkson North building, there the NADA x Exhibitionary International Gallery Prize handover will stand out for the Puerto Rican gallery Agustina Ferreyra.
