Envueltos (Wrapped)
2024, the bodies of the figures are carved from isopr, covered with fabric in the manner of multi-layered bandages. The fabrics are made of fine cotton canvas, dyed and painted by hand. The figures are coated with a mineral material based on silicate, quartz, and pigmented with natural oxides.
These wrapped, bound, and anthropomorphic figures aim to show or externalize the internal deformation that individuals suffer when involved in the voracious structures of consumerism and excessive competition, striving to have more than others without considering the consequences and the harm caused.
Selfishness, vanity, unrequited love, ambition, among others, are the ingredients we face. Wrapped in an aura of technology that binds us to a dependency from which there seems to be no escape. This work aims to lead us to reflect and consider how and where we are.
These deformations show us that we have lost the original mold. Untying ourselves, shedding, revealing ourselves to examine should be the acceptable alternative.
We pay the price of having exchanged the natural for the artificial. We have the capacity to forge a new destiny of freedom in freedom. For decades we have looked down; perhaps we should look up to something greater than ourselves.
Let us see, meditate, examine, and awaken.
