PEDRO Y EL LOBO by Serguéi Prokófiev: Starring dolls specially created for this production, the Chilean company Teatro y su Doble is bringing to the stage the famous symphonic poem by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. Peter and the Wolf tells the story of Peter, a boy who, disobeying his authoritarian grandfather, goes to face the dangers of the forest by defying the imposing wolf that frightens the people. With the help of his friend, the bird, he will manage to defeat it, catch it and understand the dimension of his own nature, that of the animal and the place of both on this planet.

Where and when: Teatro UC, Ñuñoa – Friday 3 and Saturday 4 at 4:00p.m. and 5:30p.m. / Casa de la Cultura in Talagante – Sunday 5 at 5:00p.m. / Centro Cultural in Puente Alto – Wednesday 8 at 7:00p.m.

EL ÚLTIMO APAGA LA LUby Andrés Labarca: A lone protagonist lives in a house where he accumulates thousands of possessions. He has the so-called Diogenes Disease, his mind is weakened by isolation and the environment becomes increasingly hostile. The set design by Jean Paul Mengin is decisive for this dramatic piece that mixes circus disciplines with theatre. The spaces crammed with objects of all shapes and sizes reveal a detail of accumulation that generates a depth of stage worthy of the retouched backgrounds of the films of the Studio Ghibli. Full shelves, all kinds of appliances, boxes, papers, portraits, clothes, everything is important, everything tells a story of the reification of the human experience. And in the midst of this world saturated with information and color, one man alone. A man without words.

Where and when: Matucana 100, Santiago – Friday 3 at 7:00p.m., Saturday 4 at 12:30p.m. and 4:00p.m., Sunday 5 at 12:30p.m. and 4:00p.m., Monday 6 at 7:00p.m. (includes post speech with the audience), Tuesday 7 at 7:00p.m. and Wednesday 8 at 7:00p.m.

MANO DE OBRA by Alfredo Castro: Diamela Eltit’s novels move away from the anecdotal to tell raw and direct stories about current social problems, generating strong questions about sexual behavior and moral criteria (generalized in traditional societies such as Chile). In this way, he establishes that we live in an exploited society, where unconventional behaviors are generated in certain social groups -conducts, which normally would exalt a large part of the country-, and at the same time he explains how the physical body of the individual has become a fundamental tool for capitalism -especially in labor-, turning the human being not only into an alienated being who fights to survive, but also into a true 21st century slave. From there, Alfredo Castro makes a rather curious adaptation of the novel published in 2002, as it presents the same problems, unruliness and “ravings” with a dose of humor quite attractive to the audience.

Where and when: Teatro Biobío, Concepción – Friday 3 at 7:30p.m. / Teatro La Memoria, Providencia – Wednesday 22 at 7:00p.m. – Thursday 23 at 4:00p.m. and 7:00p.m.

KASSANDRA by Sergio Blanco and directed by Soledad Gaspar: Kassandra is an approach to the Cassandra of the Greek myth era, she is both the Trojan princess whose prophecies everybody ingores and a trans prostitute that Lucas Balmaceda Pascal interprets with grace and talent. Always interacting with the audience, she enters offering cigarettes, fire, a story. It is the story of her pains and the pains of the Cassandra of Troy, blessed with prophecy, cursed so that no one believes in her visions of the future. Condemned to fulfill her tragedy, she decides to laugh. Okay? She is something else, as difficult to define as the sexuality that Bugs Bunny expresses on television disguised as a Valkyrie warrior

Where and when: Matucana 100, Santiago – from Saturday 4 until Friday 10 at 8:30p.m.

LA CIUDAD DE LA FRUTA of the company Teatro La Provincia: Whether the objective of the play is achieved or not, we must affirm that Leyla Selman definitely manages to represent her experiences, in a somewhat dreamlike way, but absolutely direct. The narrator of her own story represents her childhood, tells the facts, tells the audience the consequences of her tragedy and why her adulthood is lived with so many difficulties, and why not? If being abused by three uncles and a grandfather generates emotional and psychological disorders from which it is almost impossible to escape, in which only intensive therapy and – unfortunately – medication are necessary to deal with the world of insecurities that surrounds the character who lived through fractures, insecurities, violence and rape from his closest circle.

Where and when: Casa de la Cultura de Talagante – Wednesday 8 at 7:30p.m. / Teatro de La Memoria, Providencia – Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 at 4:00p.m. and 7:00p.m., Monday  20 and Tuesday 21 at 7:00p.m. / Teatro Biobío, Concepción – Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 at 7:30p.m.

MOCHA DICK of the company La Mona Ilustre: A strange mixture of mythology and historical facts questions our western beliefs through a work of great prolixity in the scenery, lighting and staging. A presentation that anyone would think was rehearsed for years, because from the audience you can see the preparation of each one of its members, who with a scarce amount of dialogues, transmit what is necessary so that the audience can question, think and feel the experience that is observed on the stage.

Where and when: Teatro Municipal de Casablanca – Thursday 9 at 7:00p.m. / Teatro del Lago, Frutillar – Sunday 12 at 7:00p.m. / Centro Cultural Tío Lalo Parra, Cerrillos – Friday 24 and Sunday 25 at 8:00p.m.

YO TAMBIÉN QUIERO SER UN HOMBRE BLANCO HETEROSEXUAL of the company Teatro del Antagonista: The expectations around the play were related to the 2017 Oscar winner, Moonlight (2016), where Chiron, poor, black and homosexual, lives dense situations in relation to these three realities. In the first few minutes of Yo también quiero ser un hombre blanco heterosexual (I Want to Be a Straight White Man in Spanish), we also see the protagonist of the play suffering from these three forms of discrimination: she is poor, black and lesbian, but she is also a woman. This is the real basis of the play, which will be put in check when the blades of the stage begin to turn and the tone of tragedy shifts to a dark comedy, differing from the Oscar-winning film by introducing the oasis of tragicomedy. The decontextualization, the parallel reality in which the young Haitian lesbian can be like Michael Jackson and be reborn white, the change to the humorous tone in the voice of the characters, are elements made possible by the rotation of this dramatic engine.

Where and when: Teatro Camilo Henríquez, Santiago – Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 at 4:00p.m., Wednesday 15 and Thursday 16 at 6:00p.m., Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 at 4:00p.m.

KA KIÑE, KA KIÑE of the company Teatro a lo Mapuche: Before the performance, the audience is gathered at a waiting point, then advanced to the hall. On the way, three Mapuches intercept the group and explain how hard it was to get permission to attend the trawun (assembly/conversation), where they will explain the conditions under which the two young people from the community accused under the anti-terrorist law are serving their sentences. Upon entering, only Mapudungún is spoken. Welcome to wallmapu. After a few minutes from the entrance the werken asks permission from the owner of the house to speak in winkazugun (Spanish) so that it is understood by all. But they have already managed to make the audience feel foreign in their own country. Ka kiñe, ka kiñe (again, again) introduces the audience to an assembly in a Mapuche community. There are 4 actors who visit and 3 homeowners.  The arrangement helps to immerse the audience in the reality of the play, honoring the phrase on the play’s poster that says “hyper-realistic theater in the Mapuche style”.

Where and when: Teatro Universidad Mayor, Santiago – From Monday 20 until Wednesday 22 at 5:00p.m.

DEMASIADA LIBERTAD SEXUAL LOS CONVERTIRÁ EN TERRORISTAS by Ernesto Orellana: It is a play with 5 protagonists whose sexualities are considered outside the norm, in which the “conventional” theatre is questioned from an intense, testimonial and scandalous conference. If being scandalized is a pleasure, the spectators of Too Much Sexual Freedom will border on ecstasy. This play, this conference of the “South American Contrast Action Nucleus”, aims to sweep away any cover-up the audience may have. The testimonies of its protagonists, in a cross between theatrical reality and fiction, generate uncertainty about the margins of the theatricality of what is shown on stage. The cast knows this, waits for it, discusses it.

Where and when: Teatro Mori Bellavista, Providencia – from Tuesday 21 until Sunday 26 at 8:00p.m.

2118, TRAGEDIA FUTURISTA by La Patogallina: The play is a mixture of theatre and puppets, set to live music, and shows the celebration of the tercentenary in the year 2118, when “the conservative devils” overthrew the first anarcho-feminist president. From there, Ana, the warrior protagonist, travels in time to eliminate 9 conservatives who marked her present. To talk about 2118, it must be said that the work is more fantasy than science fiction, even though there is a time travel in a killer Terminator-type proposal. It is not the time machine that matters, but the powers of the conservative demons and how their infiltration corrupted all the governments of the country. “The Beast-Guzman shows up with Diego Portales, many years before he was Pinochet’s right-hand man” Knowing these 300 years of historical defeat, Ana embarks through time to eliminate nine people responsible for the assassination of her president. She is a puppet and her strings are pulled by tragedy.

Where and when: Teatro Nacional Chileno, Santiago – Friday 24 at 4:00p.m. and Saturday 25 at 7:00p.m.

EL CÍRCULO by Colectivo Natuf. It is a play that has a cast that is half Palestinian, half Jewish. A Chilean production that since its genesis has provoked expectation with what could happen on the stage. Resentments prior to the performance do not escape the plot of the play; on the contrary, the construction of the script is permeated by resentments and news of massacres. Even on the other side of the world, in a place called Chile, a circle of men and women find it difficult to agree on what the play should say about two groups that cannot sit down to share a coffee. “I don’t want to be banned from the country I was born to be in this play, let’s make it a musical”. Time goes by, there’s no agreement. And yet, they don’t want to turn the play into a text of denunciation either. There are families and traditions that want to remember.

Where and when: Matucana 100, Santiago – Saturday 25 at 8:30p.m. and Sunday 26 at 12:30 p.m. and 20:30p.m.
