A new identity and sense are the components that give life to the National Center of Contemporary Art Cerrillos. The former airport was remodeled and set up in order to become in the nucleus of contemporary Chilean art. With unpublished works of artists as José Balmes, Vicente Huidobro, Pedro Lemebel, Voluspa Jarpa, among others, the center seeks to promote the experimentation and the dialog on the national art.
The opening carried out by diverse Govern authorities that were the vice president of the Republic, Mario Fernàndez, the minister of Culture, Ernesto Ottone, The minister of Housing, Paulina Saball and the mayor of Santiago, Claudio Orrego, and also including communal managers, artists and neighbors, who were in the inauguration of the showing “An image call word”. The exposition that gathers more than 500 works of contemporary Chilean artists seeks to reflect about the national art through the cross between image and text.
On three areas was configured the use of the space in the installations that today are part of the National Council of Culture and the Arts (CNCA), exhibition, documentation and mediation are the spaces that link the narrative of the exhibited installations in the place.
“This is an historic moment for the world of the art and culture of our country. The opening of the National Center of contemporary Art in the commune of Cerrillos means the star of all dreams, motivations and projects for visual arts in Chile. It is the recovery of a space for an unpublished project boosted by the State and from which the work will be developed on a comprehensive way about the public politics, investigation, experimentation and at the same time exhibition and mediation of contemporary art, in a commune that is raising as future cultural pole for Santiago and all the country,” said the Minister of Culture, Ernesto Ottone, who remember in his speech to the recently deceased José Balmes, artist of which is expound his iconic work “NO”, also “El Doble Exilio” in co-authorship with Gracia Barrios.
A participatory center
The opening of a public competition to occupy the position of Artistic Director mark the participatory vision that seeks to promote the National Center of Contemporary Art in the commune of Cerrillos. Also will be making up with Council of Administration with neighbors, municipality and director of international and national museums. Also will be created a curatorial committee with presence of visual artists, photographs and medieval arts and resounding.
This project seeks to answer to the necessity to count on with a state policy that manage and preserve the contemporary artistic patrimony in its different areas in national level. It is about the most innovators Project of the National Council of the Culture and the Arts in matters of visual arts. Its jobs will be to collect, catalog, preserve, investigate, exhibit and educate with strong emphasis in interdisciplinary and multicultural.
“In a space that is need, there was a large discussion by the press about that is an imitation of museums, but this in not a museum, it is a place that will propose a participatory access of contemporary art with people, with public who come from the park, with specialists, artist and national and foreign curator that could see installed works in a permanent way, as (“Quadrivium ad usum Delphini”), that was in a boxes (…). I was carrying boxes in storehouses during 18 years, so I prefer that it is in an place where people can see,” said the artist Gonzalo Díaz.
