Reseña

In the broadest terms I am interested in creating solutions for Potential Inevitabilities that I may be forced to deal with in my lifetime. I have divided my explorations into four categories: informational, psychological, physical and technological. The Informational portion of the work involves relearning skills that have been become obsolete or relegated to hobby status in contemporary life. I am compiling a list of things I do not know how to do but should. The list includes skills: navigation, fire building, plant identification, gardening, hunting, fishing, trapping, negotiating, first aid, veterinary medicine, mandolin, felling trees, water acquisition, fighting, etc. The psychological aspect of this investigation deals with the mental effects of catastrophe through an investigation of the pressures of mass migrations, conquests, refugees, castaways and victims of economic collapse. This is an endeavor requiring investigation of both negative and positive conditions and their ramifications. What I am interested in is how psychological stability can be maintained after Potential Inevitability. The physical portion of this exploration investigates the necessary shift from a passive lifestyle to a highly participatory one. In the aftermath of Potential Inevitability many technological advances that helped to reduce the amount of physical exertion necessary in daily life will cease to operate or will only operate on a limited basis. The technological portion of my research focuses on systems, structures and devices designed to facilitate the necessities of sustaining life. Many are based on vernacular methods infused with contemporary innovations. The technological solutions that I am involved in include the creation of concealed dwellings, transportable dwellings, small scale water and food collection, transport and storage as well as methods of power generation and storage. The set of systems in this exhibition focus primarily on the Informational and Technological aspects of my investigation. They are designed to allow short term self-sufficiency in a familiar urban location in the aftermath of Potential Inevitability.
