Cuando Hayter fundó en París, en el año 1927, su famoso ATELIER - 17, comenzó a difundir por Europa una técnica de grabado que consiste en aplicar distintos tipos de impresión, con una o varias planchas de metal, con variados colores; técnica que se denominó "método del rodillo blando y el rodillo duro", y que hoy se conoce con el nombre de su fundador, Hayter. Con los rodillos blandos y duros se entinta los diversos niveles de una plancha grabada, logrando diferentes densidades de tinta y gran variedad de matices en el color. Esta es una de las técnicas empleadas por la artista chilena Mónica Paz, para producir una serie de grabados donde los colores y las luces se complementan armoniosamente, generando atmósferas que rememoran los arreboles de un atardecer surrealista, plagado de seres fantásticos y elementos en perspectiva distorsionada, por un ojo y una mano que priorizan la expresión por sobre la fiel reproducción de la realidad. Integrando en una misma plana, entonces, recursos como la aguatinta, el aguafuerte y el hayter, Mónica Paz nos emplaza a sumergirnos en un mundo colorido que no es meramente alegre o naïf: las escaleras al cielo, los gatos curvados, los árboles empinados, todo apunta hacia un más allá, un algo más arriba, que deja un sello melancólico en quién ha logrado compenetrarse con su contenido. Son sus series de grabados, por cierto, un conjunto de imágenes a descubrir y disfrutar: cada elemento tiene su significado, y cada significado variará según el ánimo de quien observe.
